Pregnancy is a beautiful thing and I love it but one thing I don’t want to embrace are stretch marks. This is just my personal view on them, I just don’t want them and if there is anything I can do to prevent them I’ll try it. I have seen the post floating around with amazing mothers sharing their after baby body and fully embracing and owning their stretch marks and rightfully so with pride. Its something to be proud of growing a human and carrying life in your belly for 9 months. I don’t think stretch marks are marks of a ruined body or make you less beautiful but come on I doubt any woman has said “YASSSS girl I got some stretch marks whoop whoop!!!” after having a baby.
Luckily with my past pregnancies I did not get stretch marks. Now with this being my third baby I am a little worried especially since this is the biggest my belly has ever been and still growing! While stretch marks are a hereditary thing, have a thing or two to do with hormones, and a dependent on your skin elasticity its hard and nearly impossible to completely prevent them but there are ways you can reduce them or slow down the stretching process.
A few things NOT to do
- Don’t scratch your belly
- No direct sunlight
- No harsh soaps
Finding a product that works for you
There are tons of products out there for stretch mark prevention and I have tried a lot of them but have found either they are too oily, leave a sticky residue, or just don’t hydrate well at all.
I use Mustela mother and baby products because they are reasonably priced and I truly love that they are committed to safety and their mission to use natural ingredients whenever possible and that they don’t use parabens, phenoxyethanol, phtalates or alcohol in their products. Plus the products smell great and don’t leave me feeling sticky wishing I could wipe it off and jump in the shower and I feel completely worry free using them on my children.
One of my main concerns when it comes to taking care of my ever growing bump is keeping it hydrated. I can always tell when my belly needs a little refresher because it will start to look extra shiny, feel extremely soft/smooth, and can sometimes get itchy. I like to use moisturizers/creams and oils to give my skin the hydration it needs.
Starting a healthy habit
Getting into a habit of lathering up with moisturizers in the morning, after showers, and before bed is a great way to stay on top of hydrating your belly.
Here is my routine and products I use:
- In the morning/after showers I use my Mustela Stretch Mark Prevention Oil on my belly rubbing in an circular motion with a flat palm and Soothing Moisturizing Balm all over my body for added moisture.
- If throughout the day I feel like I need that refresher I use Mustela Stretch Mark Prevention Cream on my belly rubbing in a circular motion with a flat palm.
- In the evening I use all three starting with the oil then the prevention cream and last I use the Soothing Balm on the rest of my body.
A new product I’ve been using for the first time is Mustela’s Bust Firming Serum. It goes on very light and soft which I love and its made with ingredients of natural origin which I also love since my hormones have my chest all sorts of broken out theses days. The serum helps to firm and tone skin in the breasts, chest, and neck. Also adds resistance to variation in breast size so I will definitely continue using it after birth and throughout nursing!
