This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of The J.M. Smucker Company. The opinions and text are all mine. I’m partnering with Folgers® at Walmart through the Share A Cup & A Story campaign, to create personal connections with Veterans and honor their service to our country.
As most of you may know my family and I recently took some leave and went back home to the states to visit family. We were there for a good 2 and a half months. It was so amazing to be back in America after being overseas for nearly 10 months. Our time there was incredible, but it was so hard to fit everything into our short time to last the rest of our time overseas until we move to our next duty station. I had a mini bucket-list written up with all of my must do’s. One thing on my list to do was to have some quality time with my grandfather, Pops.
It’s so important to take time to acknowledge those who have giving their time to selflessly serve our country. Veteran’s Day means more to me than the just one day a year we say, “Thank You.”. It hits home for me. I wanted to spend quality time while I was stateside to share the military connection between my Pops and I. My Pops served in the Navy and my husband is currently active duty in the Navy. I love being able to relate and share stories with him.
Over the past few months his health has been giving him some trouble and he had to have some extensive surgery to get back in tip top shape which lead him to a rehabilitation hospital. I took some time out of my week and headed out to see him one morning with some comforts of home in tow. I ran to Walmart and picked up some Folgers® Classic Roast to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while we caught up on life.
When I arrived he was so excited to see me but a little worn out from all of the physical therapy he had been doing. He was delighted to see that I had picked up some Folgers coffee for us to sip on while we talked. As we sat chatting I remembered that when I was in elementary school I had a project to interview someone in the military. I thought of my Pops. I didn’t know much about the military then, but I knew he had a very important job protecting our country. I was so proud showing up to school with my project decorated in red, white, and blue and a few pictures of my Pops
in uniform. I remember how much he had to say then and wanted to hear all about it again now that I am an adult and have more of an understanding on the subject.
It caught me off guard, he really didn’t want to talk about any of his stories when I asked him about his time serving. I thought maybe it was because he didn’t want to relive the memories. Not the case at all. Instead he wanted to hear about mine, how I was doing being a military spouse and living overseas, and gave me a little advice on making the best of all the moving we do as a military family as well as the time spent away from loved ones.
I loved the conversations we shared. Some with laughs and a few with tears. Getting to see him one last time before I went back overseas meant so much to me. It was wonderful to see him light up just having someone take the time to thank him and want to hear about the sacrifice he made during his time serving.
While he didn’t have too much to say I learned to really enjoy this season in my life even though it can be tough at times, it will be rewarding in the end.
You too can bring some joy to someone’s day by taking part in the Share A Cup & A Story with Folgers at Walmart and honor a veteran and their service to our country. Head over to Walmart, pick up some Folgers Classic Roast, and make time for some quality conversation with a veteran over a cup of coffee. You never know what amazing stories you will hear and just how much your interest in their service will mean to them.
Do you have a story you’d like to share about a veteran in your life? Leave me a comment and let me know, I would love to hear about it.
