Feeling like a walking food truck is nothing new to me. Ames, my newest little babe, will be my third baby to EBF (exclusively breast feed). I choose to nurse my children rather than formula feed because I feel the benefits of breastfeeding are so amazing. Also because I have the ability to do so.
My nursing journey came pretty naturally but not without trial and error. At times I failed but I also learned. Like the time I thought my first baby was getting enough milk and using me as a pacifier but in reality she was cluster feeding and trying to naturally build up my supply to what she needed. I learned many times that a let down can happen anytime, so be prepared. I also learned to go back to sleep on a bed soaked in breastmilk. I figured out through pain not too pump too much or else you could have an over supply and your boobs will feel like they are going to explode. I have cried over spilled milk, a.k.a “liquid gold”. And as a third time nursing mama I let my mom brain get the best of me and had to throw out 30 oz of pumped milk….yep it pains me to think about it still to this day! Like how did I forget how to care for my milk! I let it sit in the fridge too long and should have popped them in the freezer. *palm in face*
Nursing pads, nipple creams, breast pumps, nipple this, breast that!!! Nursing can be overwhelming for a first time mom and even a third time mom. I want to share a few things that helped me make nursing easier and build my milk supply.
- Nursing bras
- Nursing Pillow
- Tops/ Dresses that are deep -v neck or surplice
- Nursing cover (use code thechicblonde15 for 15% off)
- Nursing baby in different positions for better latch (laying side by side is my fav)
- Download an app to help track feedings
- Nurse in a peaceful environment (if possible, staying relaxed yeps for better bonding and easier nursing)
- Nursing pads
- Nipple cream to sooth sore or dry nipples
Building Milk Supply
- Drink lots of water
- Plenty of sleep
- Healthy diet
- Foods good for nursing :
– Carrots, Sweet potatoes , Garlic, Milk, Asparagus, Almonds, Avocados, Salmon
- Lactation cookies
- Nurse often
- Pump or express milk after baby nurses to build or keep up supply
- Skin to skin nursing
- Pump between every other feeding to build supply
- Supportive Bra

Those are just a few tips for nursing and milk supply but you can find much more on the La Leche League webiste or by contacting a certified lactation consultant.
Nursing can be incredibly rewarding for you and baby. The bond you will share during your nursing journey is one like no other. There is something wonderful knowing that only you can give your baby what they need during this time and all they want is you. That feeling can also be a little stressful and overwhelming when you just want a break. Its not uncommon to want your freedom back at times, to be able to have a moment away from baby to focus on you for a bit without worrying about nursing or pumping. That time will come whether you choose to stop breastfeeding or if your baby self weans. In the meantime enjoy these precious moments and the quite times you have with your little one.
My biggest advice is don’t give up so quickly and especially don’t let others make you feel awkward or uncomfortable about feeding your baby…..if they don’t like, it screw them.
